On “Having Time To Blog”

I met with someone yesterday who said to me that he didn’t have any time to blog. Moments later, he told me what was happening on “Ice Loves Coco.” Earlier in the day, a woman explained that she didn’t really have the time for another social network, and then she explained how she volunteers for six different organizations in her town for various purposes.

-Chris Brogan, Haven’t Had Time To Blog

When I’m working with a company who wants to expand into the digital sphere, I nearly always hear, “A blog sounds like a good idea, but I just don’t know if I’ll have time.”

Of course you don’t have time! I don’t have time, either. My business partner – she also doesn’t have time to blog. No one has time to blog. So how are you supposed to grow your business through social media if you don’t have time to blog? Simple: You make time to blog. Just like you make time for accounting, just like you make time for traditional marketing, just like you make time for sales.

This is a new field for most businesses, so it’s understandable that there’s some natural resistance… But if you want your little corner of the multi-billion dollar, digital marketplace, you have to choose to obtain it.

Maybe people would be better off saying, “I choose not to make time to blog because there are other things that are more important to me.” I love my blog, and I wish I could do it full time. But the fact is, when I get home from work, there are other priorities that have to come first–whether time with my partner, doing laundry, or mentally detoxing.

You’re right– you MAKE time to blog. It’s all about a choice, and people need to admit that to themselves.

    Ashe: Exactly!

It upsets me when clients want to grow their business, and know that a blog is the right way to go to get their presence up, but write it off based on “too much work” or something similar. You can’t get the benefits without the effort, unfortunately.

Making time for the other things you mention is just as crucial! Time management entered an entirely NEW level if importance once blogs became linked to successful marketing tactics, I think.
